Managing for daily improvement is a well known practice in lean, in which boards are used to visually display pacing, issues of the day, etc. Many companies utilized a tiered process for connecting the operations to the value stream strategy and then to the business hoshin. However, what most fail to recognize is the power of developing lean leaders at every level through this process.

Why is this important?

Many leaders implement several of these tools, yet find themselves still involved in fire-fighting or having to decisions their team leaders and supervisors should be able to make. Or they find they aren't achieving true root cause corrective action, which slows the kaizen progress.

This signifies a gap in their problem solving capability, and an opportunity to teach, coach, and develop. The top leaders should be able to focus more strategically on the moving the value stream forward and deploying the hoshin.
