Webinar: Assessing and Addressing Beliefs in the Afterlife: Competencies and Ethics

This class will provide an introduction to the ethical and competency issues that are relevant to assessing and addressing afterlife beliefs in the psychotherapy setting. The class will assist participants in beginning to identify their personal attitudes and biases regarding religion, spirituality, and afterlife beliefs that can affect the quality of the therapy provided. In addition, some of the more common ethical issues, such as the ethical standard of cultural competence and ethical responsibility of informed consent, will be discussed as they relate to afterlife beliefs of the client. Lastly, assessment tools (both open-ended and scored scales) will be identified and discussed as important aspects of competent assessment.

Speakers:
Forever Family Foundation
Beth Christopherson, LCSW
Beth Christopherson, LCSW, is a licensed clinical social worker and psychotherapist in Houston, TX. Her practice and published work focuses on integrating spirituality into the client's healing process. She has written about the ethics, options, and challenges for mental health providers in assessing and addressing afterlife beliefs and spiritual experiences in articles such as The Elephant in the Room of Grief and The Spiritual but not Religious: What Social Workers Need to Know. She also developed and presented the workshop “Ethically Integrating Afterlife Beliefs in Therapy” at the University of Houston Graduate College of Social Work. Because she values both the academic and spiritual aspects of grief and loss, Beth serves as an ad hoc reviewer for the Journal of Death and Dying; she is also a member of the Association for Death Education and Counseling (ADEC), the International Association of Near-Death Studies (IANDS), and the Forever Family Foundation. One of her passions is teaching and encouraging others to succeed; therefore, Beth frequently presents at local universities and medical schools on a variety of topics related to mental health and quality-of-life issues.
