The unprecedented rise in migration from the Middle East and Africa to Europe is set to continue for the foreseeable future. Debates focus on migrants as a homogenous group ‘fleeing’ their countries for similar reasons.
Research shows this is not the case.
Reasons for migrating to Europe vary and individual stories are unique. Many migrants do however follow similar routes, and some of their journeys are facilitated illegally for profit.
Understanding these dynamics is key to finding practical solutions.
This View on Africa will be presented by Ottilia Anna Maunganidze, a senior researcher in the office of the Executive Director. She will discuss selected results from a new study conducted by the ISS in partnership with the Global Initiative against Transnational Organized Crime.
